Hemp: facts and misdeeds of a wonderful plant

Species

Hemp belongs to the Cannabinaceae family, it is an annual plant and in nature it is dioecious, which means that in its population there are specimens that bear only female flowers and specimens that bear only male flowers. campo you can find subjects with very different characters, for example there are plants that carry male and female flowers on the same stem (monoicism), plants that contain high levels of THC and plants that are completely without it, plants with coloring of the leaves which varies from light green to dark green to purplish.

Variety of hemp

Over time and with selection, man has created many varieties: from fiber, from seed (usually monoecious), from drugs.  The best known and still competitive Italian varieties are: Carmagnola, CS (Selected Carmagnola), Fibranova. The germplasm of other famous varieties such as Eletta Campana and Bolognese has been lost. In recent years, the ISCI of Bologna has selected new varieties derived from the traditional ones. We have sown two monoecious seed varieties, Felina and Fedora.

Cannabis indica does not exist

Hemp: the plant

Stem

The hemp plant has an erect stem whose height can vary from 1 to 4/5 meters on average depending on the variety, the soil and climatic conditions and again the sowing density. Some specimens, in Piedmontese called "lanse", even exceed 7 meters. The section of the stem can vary from a few millimeters to a few centimeters. The stem is made up of an external green bark made up of fibers held together by pectins and a very light white inner part called canapulo. The fiber represents 25/30 percent of the stem and consists of about 82 percent from cellulose and 6 percent from lignin; the hemp represents 70/75 percent and is made up of about 77 percent of cellulose and about 19 percent of lignin, white in color. The thicker the plant, the coarser and stronger the fiber. In the same plant, the fiber is coarser towards the root and finer towards the top.

Root system

It consists of a robust taproot with slender lateral branches, which in loose soils reaches a depth of 150 cm.
